Just as a term limit prevents the United States from having a life long President, members of congress need the same limitation. As it is, there are numerous congressional members and senators that have been in office for 30 or more years.
Elected officials are not nor were they ever intended to have such a "CAREER." These elected office positions are to be a community service. Being an elected official for life also makes the person immune from the "real" problems of their constituents.
Such an attempt was made after the 1994 congressional turn over lead by Mr. Newt Gingrich. Since that attempt, there has not been another. If memory serves, the plan was 12 years for each house (a maximum of 2 senatorial terms and 6 congressional terms). This plan is fine, but if there is another one, perhaps it should be considered.
As such a change would be harmful to the established belief of life-long office holdings, the change will need to be a "grass-roots" action for a Constitutional Amendment that would require limits on publicly elected officials.
What do you think? Is this possible? Is there a better solution?
